About Van Derhoof Physical Therapy

Van Derhoof Physical Therapy is a private physical therapy home care practice that has been providing highly personalized physical therapy services in the Washington, DC area for over a decade. The company’s founder, Ali Thomas, MSPT and her husband, Glenn Thomas, PTA, CPT are personally involved in the evaluation, treatment and progress of all of their clients. Ali and Glenn have created a program that includes the necessary therapies, services, equipment, education and training that individuals, their families and their caregivers need to keep their clients “moving into life”. Therapies and related services are provided in your home for the most nurturing setting possible.

Ali Thomas, MSPT

Ali received her Bachelors of Clinical Science in 1994 and continued on to receive her Master of Science in Physical Therapy from Ithaca College in 1995.

Ali founded VPT in 2001 after realizing the importance of the holistic approach to recovery. Her knowledge, experience and skill level cover a wide spectrum of care settings including acute care, inpatient rehabilitation, long term care and home care.

Ali has focused her efforts on the needs of the older adult as well as younger people recovering from physical trauma, surgery or other neurological and orthopedic conditions that result in physical deficits and limitations.

Ali and her husband Glenn have lived in the Brookland area in the District of Columbia for over 17 years where they are raising their two beautiful daughters.

Glenn Thomas, PTA, CPT

Glenn has been a licensed Physical Therapy Assistant since 1989 and a certified personal trainer since 1999. He has 21 years of experience in the field of physical therapy which includes 19 years at Georgetown University Hospital and 2 years at Kernan Hospital in Baltimore.

His experience has provided Glenn with intensive skills and expertise in orthopedics, sports medicine, aquatic therapy, neurological impairments, would care and hemophilia. Glenn specializes in manual therapy and soft tissue mobilization and is certified in aquatic therapy, personal training for strength and conditioning, golf strength and conditioning, and professional bike fitting.

Inger Schafer, PT

Inger has been a licensed Physical Therapist for 13 years. She graduated from the University of New England in Biddeford, ME with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Physical Therapy in 1998. Prior to joining VanDerhoof Physical Therapy, Inger practiced in out-patient orthopedic settings where she developed exceptional exercise programming skills.

Since early 2011 Inger has been working with clients in their homes in the District of Columbia and Virginia. She works with younger clients but has focused on the older client and helping them achieve the goal of maintaining their ability to function independently and remain at home. Inger loves working in this specialty, and takes great pride in seeing her clients as they develop increased strength and independence. Her continuing education focuses is on improving her hands-on skills and developing a wider expertise of the challenges and issues of working with the aging population.

For the past eight and a half years Inger has lived in the District of Columbia with her husband and two daughters.
